Over the last nine years, the Cary Rotary Club has raised approximately $225,000 (net) for hunger relief, thanks to generous sponsors and dedicated volunteers. Through donations and hard work we have been able to keep expenses very low, typically under 15 percent of gross contributions, allowing the vast majority of money raised to go directly to local and international hunger relief. Here is how the donations have been distributed:

International Hunger Relief Efforts:

The club has donated $125,000 to help fund Stop Hunger Now’s Million Meals for Children project. The Cary Rotary Club was instrumental in establishing this program and members, family, friends, and volunteers have helped package 3.1 million meals since 2006 in Rotary District 7710.  Meals have gone to feed hungry children in some of the poorest countries in Africa and South America. Each package is specially formulated for the undernourished. The meals are distributed at schools, encouraging parents to send their children to school. For most it will be the only meal they eat that day.  $21,000 was donated to disaster relief in Southeast Asia (Thailand and Sri Lanka) after the devastating tsunami in 2004. Contributions totaling $16,000 have assisted with hunger relief efforts in Africa (Zimbabwe and Zambia) and Haiti (Gonaives and Port-au-Prince areas).

Local Hunger Relief Efforts:

$35,000 has been donated to support the Interfaith Food Shuttle. The program we support feeds school children in Wake County during weekends, holidays and breaks. These are children who qualify for free or reduced cost meals at school but often go underfed when school is not in session.

Society of St. Andrew has received $9,000.  The non-profit organization provides healthy, nutritious produce to food agencies serving the poor at no cost. In 2005, $5,000 in food donations went to relocated victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Contributions totaling $10,000 went towards supporting Meals on Wheels, Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen, Urban Ministries, From Jesus With Love, and Raleigh Rescue Mission. These organizations provide food, health care and other supplies to the poor and homeless in our area.

Your Help Is Needed in 2013:

The organizations we support and donate monies to are carefully selected and members of the Cary Rotary Club volunteer at nearly every one of these non-profits. We truly care about making a difference and you can, too, by joining our efforts. Your contributions during these trying economic times are more important than ever. With the increase in food costs and growing numbers of people facing hunger everywhere, you can make an enormous difference in someone’s life.
